The world is not a safe place for our loved ones. We do our best as parents and concerned care givers, but the bottom line is that it is not possible to forsee and avoid every possible hazzard that could occur to our children.


Equally distrubing is that there is no "easy button" when it comes to teaching our loved ones How to be safe, fit and resilient in order to face the challenges that will confront them through out their lives.


Typically parents and guardians take 3 approaches to these issues with their family

1. Assume, incorrectly, that these topics are being discussed in school. or other organizations (Scouts, 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs, ect.)

2. Don't think about it, choosing to believe that it won't happen to them or their children

3. They know they should do more to talk to their children and loved ones, but don't want to scare them so they put it off.


Never assume that useful information is being given to your loved ones! Realistically, how could it be? Teachers, Scout Leader and Program Counselors can not possibly know the specific challenges that your child faces every day, they aren't with them. They couldn't know your child's neighborhood or the lay out of your house in the event of a home invasion.


(Can we really expect them to be able to tell our children where to go if a fire breaks out in our home? They could not tell them specifically what room in the house is the safest to be in in the event of a sudden sever storm?)



If you don't believe that it can't happen to you, you are lying to yourself and placing your family needlessly at risk of injury or worse! Nobody plans on becoming a statistic following a disaster, but if you don't plan...


Even more importantly, you must communicate that plan to your family, the ones who will need it most if for what ever reason you are not with them when disaster strikes!



You probably realise that there is important information that you must teach your loved ones, but you don't want to scare them. It is never easy to talk about fires, car accidents, home invasions, car jackings, muggings or other disasters, man made or natural. That doesn't mean we don't talk about them, it just means that we must present the information in a way that is understandable and non threatening to our young people.
